Is Jesus Better Than Sex?

A few weeks ago, I had the honor to speak to 100+ leaders on sexuality, Christ, and culture. In a culture that continues to define sex on their personal preference(s) or defined position, I find it interesting that Jesus said (over 2000 years ago) that he is better than sex. He said,

34 “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, 35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, 36 for they cannot die anymore, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.

In short, Jesus is saying…

HE is better than sex because he created it.

Jesus proclaims that HE is God and therefore created sex. In Genesis 2, God created sex in the context of marriage and evidently suggests that HE has the best plan for sex.

HE is better than sex because he is about relationships

Jesus reveals that relationship with God is better than any relationship that we find here on earth. Jesus suggests that relationship with God will last forever where sex (orgasm) does not.

HE is better than sex because he satisfies the human heart

All humanity desires two things: 1) to love, and 2) to be loved. Jesus reveals here that he satisfies this longing in people’s hearts. In our culture, love is minimalized to sex but Jesus says that love experienced from Him is so much better.

HE is better than sex because of Heaven.

Jesus says there will be no sex in heaven. This is a difficult reality for the human mind (and experience) to comprehend because humanity believes that sex + relationship is the deepest form of intimacy. With that said, Jesus is simply saying that Heaven will be better than the human experience of sex. This is fascinating to me.

HE is better than sex because He invites humanity to be defined by Him, not by sexuality.

This is a great reality – that my identity is not based on my last name, how much money (or lack of it) I have in my bank account, what I do for work, the failures I have made or the regrets that I have experienced. My identity is in Christ – loved, called, chosen, new, FULL, living in view of eternity with Christ.

Is heaven – experiencing Christ and all that HE has for you – better than sex?
